Twin Turbo LS Volvo 240: The 450HP Sleeper Built to Embarrass an E30

1992 Volvo 240 with a twin turbo LS V8 engine and sleeper performance build

The twin turbo LS Volvo 240 is a seriously unexpected sleeper, combining the boxy simplicity of a 1992 Volvo 240 with a turbocharged Chevrolet LS V8 and a rear-wheel-drive chassis. Built by Mason over several years, the Volvo features a Gen 3 5.3L LM4 V8, twin turbochargers, a Tremec TKX 5-speed manual transmission, water-methanol injection and a custom fuel and engine management setup. Running around 5 to 6 PSI of boost, the lightweight Volvo produces roughly 450 horsepower while retaining its understated appearance and surprisingly practical character.

The build goes far beyond an engine swap. Mercedes C63 AMG leather seats, Wilwood brakes, aftermarket coilovers, upgraded sway bars, wider tires and a strengthened rear end transform the classic Volvo into a far more capable performance car. With the twin turbos tucked neatly under the hood and almost no obvious exterior modifications, the twin turbo LS Volvo 240 remains a genuine sleeper. The result is an old-school Swedish sedan with V8 power, rear-wheel-drive attitude and enough performance to surprise considerably more exotic machinery.
